Retha Mae Day

December 3, 1931 — July 15, 2019

Mrs. Retha Mae Boyett Day, 87, passed away Monday, July 15, 2019, following a short illness. Mrs. Day was born December 3, 1931 in Geneva, Alabama to the late Pete Boyett and Gypsie Hall Boyett. A legacy of unconditional love she leaves instilled in four generations of children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. A wonderful and devoted mother and grandmother of her own family, she willingly extended this love and nurture to so many others over the years.  Known affectionately by so many as “Ma”, “Nanny”, “Ms. Day” or just “Mama”, she never overlooked anyone. She was well known to help others in times of need and found great joy in opening her home, heart, and her front porch to so many, expanding her own large family by “adopting” in many others. She was an excellent cook and in years past loved preparing large meals for family and friends, to gather and enjoy. Christmas Eve was a special time for her and her family as they gathered each year. She took pride in ensuring that every adult and child received a unique gift from her. In addition to enjoying time spent on her front porch, she loved to grow and nurture plants and was also a huge fan of watching NBA basketball games. She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Day, two sons, Jerry “Pee Wee” Day and Robbie Day, one grandson, Jamie “Lard” Griffis, and two sons-in-law: Earl Stalvey and Eddie Griffis. Mrs. Day is survived by her children: Jean Stalvey, Brenda Griffis, Betty (Dorel) Day and Ray (Eldoris) Day all of Homerville, Larry Day, St. Simons, GA and George (Candy) Griffis, Kirkland, GA; a daughter-in-law: Mary Day, Homerville; fifteen grandchildren: Cindy (Jason) Sirmans, Jerri Lynn (Wade) Spivey, Amy (Leonard) Wheeler, Richard (Karen) Stalvey, Junior Stalvey, Allen Ray (Scarlett) Day, Sharon (Mike) Lamie, Delain (Brandon) White, Carly Day, Liza Day, Brad Henderson, Samantha Peek and Robbie Dock Day; 21 great grandchildren, 13 great great grandchildren; two brothers, Pete Boyett, Jr., and Ellie B. (Linda) Boyett, Bonifay, FL; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services for Mrs. Day will be held Thursday, July 18, 2019, at eleven a.m. at the Trinity Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Pine Forest Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 17, 2019, from 6 till 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Day will be carried to the church one hour prior to the services. Sympathy maybe expressed by signing the online registry at www.roundtreefuneralhome.net.
