James Gregory “Greg” Smith, 51, died peacefully January 13, 2021, from Covid-19 complications at South Georgia Medical Center.
Greg was born May 7, 1969, to Gerald and Lorine Strickland Smith. He graduated from Clinch County High in 1987 and entered the National Guard where he served honorably for 6 years. He also served his country during Desert Storm. He was a member of the Homerville First Baptist Church.
He began a 31-year profession in electrical work with his final service as a foreman with Mastec Construction of Tallahassee, Fla.
Greg loved people and helped so many in this community with electrical issues, but as competent as he was at his work and was known as a hard worker, everyone knew him best for his great humor and infectious laughter. Greg never met a stranger, always helped others, and his love for people is the legacy he leaves for his beloved children Mary Margaret and James Ezekiel “Zeke” Smith. Not only did he teach them to love people, he also taught them to love the outdoors, where hunting and fishing were his passions. He thoroughly enjoyed his last hunting trip in Kentucky in November.
Family was his greatest joy, and he loved to play card games like UNO and Skipbo with Zeke, Mary Margaret and her fiancé, Alex Slusher. Greg was thrilled in December when approached by Alex who asked if he could marry Mary Margaret.
Greg married Lori Dickerson Smith on November 20, 1993. In the last 27 years, they have dedicated their lives to their children and family. For Greg, his family truly has been his life’s greatest work. He was so proud of Mary Margaret graduating from nursing school and working at SGMC and was also so proud of Zeke for attending Valdosta State University.
Survivors in addition to his wife, children, and parents are his sister and brother-in-law Debbie and Mike Hayes, all of Homerville. He also leaves many other relatives he dearly cherished.
Graveside services for Greg will be held Saturday, January 16, 2021, at two p.m., in the Pine Forest Cemetery.
