Ellice Passmore Martin

Homerville

Ellice Passmore Martin, 75, of Homerville passed away Sunday, July 7, 2024, at her residence after a sudden illness. She was born in Hahira, Georgia to the late Robert Alexander and Louise Griffin Passmore. Mrs. Martin was a graduate of Hahira High School and was the Lowndes County Star Student. She also graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Georgia and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society. An educator, teacher, principal, and professor for forty-nine years, she received her doctorate in education from Valdosta State University in 1998. Mrs. Martin was named Star Teacher six times over her career, and in 2014 received the Gladys M. Thomason award for distinguished service in the field of mathematics education. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher Society. For decades, while teaching at Clinch County High School, she served as the Beta Club Sponsor, and led student groups to Europe. She was also a Professor of Education at the College of Education at Valdosta State University for 16 years.

Mrs. Martin served as the Clinch County Hospital Board Chairman and received the Clinch County Outstanding Citizen Award along with her husband in 2009. She was the Vice Chairman of the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Board. Mrs. Martin was a devoted member of Homerville United Methodist Church where she served as the Choir Director and was very active in all activities at the church. 

Along with her parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Passmore Wilkes.

Survivors include her husband of fifty-seven years, L. Philips Martin of Homerville; one son and daughter-in-law, Brett P. and Traycee Martin of Valdosta; one daughter and son-in-law, Clare Martin and Daniel Roath of Atlanta; four grandchildren, Sidney Alexander Martin, Mary Clare Martin, John Philips Roath, and Daniel Luke Roath; brother and sister-in-law, R. LaRon and Melissa Passmore of Hahira and brother-in-law Terry T. Wilkes of Valdosta; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday morning, July 10, 2024, at 11 am at Homerville United Methodist Church with Rev. Joseph Carter officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Forest Cemetery with Rev. James Davis officiating.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5 until 8 pm at Homerville United Methodist Church.

Memorial donations may be made to Homerville United Methodist Church Children's ministries or the S. Walter Martin Scholarship at Valdosta State University.
