Elaine Hughes Hendley

June 19, 1947 — September 30, 2024

Homerville

Elaine Hughes Hendley, 77, of Homerville, woke up in the presence of her Savior on September 30, 2024. After an extended battle with cancer, she is now free. She was born in 1947 in Dupont, Georgia the daughter of Ora Lee and Gordon M. Hughes. A Baby-Boomer child, Elaine was the youngest of four and grew up in a sharecropper family, losing her father when she was just a young girl.

Elaine and Nass met one afternoon in high school after he came in from cropping tobacco and she was picking blackberries with his sister. He was smitten and told his brothers, "I'm going to marry that girl." After getting married in 1968, she later became a mother and a doting grandmother. She retired from the Clinch County Board of Education after working alongside many dear colleagues for more than 25 years. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church Homerville and believed strongly in showing God's love to others. She served the church for decades not only in attendance but also hosting WMU meetings in her home, preparing food and serving on Wednesday nights, and helping with summer VBS. She was a talented cook, a prankster, was delighted by birds, had a knack for growing flowers, and used her talent for caring for others in countless ways. She and her walking buddies covered many miles around town. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and loved them deeply. Her last words were, "I love you."

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers and sister, Morris Hughes, Ossie Hughes, and Sarah Hughes Lutz. She is survived by her husband, Nass Hendley of Homerville, a daughter and son-in-law; April and Jon Rodell of Johns Creek, and a son and daughter-in-law: Matthew and Shannon Hendley, of Brunswick; three granddaughters, Cana, Olivia, and Macy, and five grandsons, Jonson, Pierce, Hughes, Corban, and Cornelius, and many dear nieces and nephews.

Friends and family are invited to join us for this short service at North Cemetery on Thursday, October 3rd, at 2 pm, dress is casual. A Celebration of Life will be held at First Baptist Church Homerville at a later date for more people to attend. The family will receive friends at that time.
