Mr. Don Gordan Shelton, passed away Monday, May 11, 2020 in the Vista Park Nursing Home, Douglas, GA, following a short illness. Mr. Don Gordon Shelton was born on August 12th, 1934 in Giles County, Tennessee to Ann Lacey Dougherty Shelton and Jack Owen “Beef” Shelton. Don graduated from Jones High School in Lynnville, Tennessee in 1952. At the age of 18, Don decided that he wanted to see the world and leave the small town of Lynnville, so he enlisted into the U.S. Air Force and was sent to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Once arriving in San Antonio, Don ventured out to one of the surrounding towns, named Devine, where he would later meet his future wife of 59 years, Dora Fernandez. Don and Dora married on June 30th, 1956 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Devine, Texas. Later in life, Don served and retired out of the U.S. Navy, worked as a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, and owned “Double D Gun Shop” in Victoria, Texas and later in Homerville, Georgia. Don served in both Korea and Vietnam while in the military and was also a member of the Shriners, Masons and the Homerville Congregational Methodist Church. Since 2012, Don and Dora lived in Homerville, GA. He was preceded in death by his wife: Dora Fernandez Shelton; his parents: Jack Owen “Beef” and Ann Lacey Shelton; one brother: Jack Owen Shelton Jr.; and one brother-in-law: James Wolfe. Survivors are two sons and daughter-in-laws: James and Agnes Shelton of Homerville, GA & Richard and Roberta Shelton of Zirconia, NC; one sister and brother-in-law: Martha Helen and Gene Flowers of Nashville, TN; two grandchildren: Owen and Megan Shelton of Clayton, GA & Sarah and John Yawn of Poulan, GA; numerous brother and sisters-in-law by marriage along with many nieces and nephews. There will be a service for Mr. Shelton in Devine, Texas on Tuesday, May 19, 2020. In lieu of flowers the family ask that you make donations to Shriners Hospital for Children at lovetotherescue.org.
