Mr. George Darrell Wetherington, Sr., 72, died peacefully on Saturday, October 3, 2020, surrounded by his family following a brief illness. Mr. Wetherington was born, August 11, 1948, in Valdosta, GA, to the late Frank L. Wetherington and Lizzie Idell Watson Wetherington. Among many things throughout his life, Darrell was a stellar three sport athlete at Clinch County High School. He would make his mark on CCHS athletics from 1962-1966 and leave a legacy for future Panther athletes. Although Darrell was a four year letterman in basketball as well as track & field, he excelled in football where he was a four year letterman, three year starter, and served as team captain for two years. Darrell’s athletic success culminated when he was offered a football scholarship to Henderson State following his senior season. He was a member of the Homerville United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men. Darrell truly loved his church and his church family. He also enjoyed woodworking and grilling for the annual United Methodist Church Bazaar. He was especially known for his wooden trays. Darrell was an amazing caregiver for his entire family, especially for his previous wife, Martha Jon Wetherington, who preceded him in death. He was a man who took great pride in providing for others, especially his family. One way he enjoyed taking care of others was by cooking. His specialties ranged from low county boils to homemade potato salad to “fall off the bone” ribs to a delicious family pumpkin pie. He enjoyed fishing trips with his buddies, Jerry Edwards and Keith Cox, whether they caught any fish or not, they finished the day off with a big lunch. He retired from CSX Railroad in Waycross, GA, where he worked for over forty years.
