Bessie Trowell Strickland

June 12, 1926 — January 25, 2021

B Bessie Viola Trowell Strickland June 12, 1926 to January 25, 2021 Bessie Viola Trowell Strickland, formally of Homerville Ga. went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 25, 2021. She lived most all of her life in Clinch County and she passed away at Diamond Assisted Living and Memory Care in Green Cove Springs, FL, where she had lived for the past several years. Mrs. Strickland was born on June 12, 1926 in Cogdell, GA to the late Robert Hardy Trowell, III and Bertie Jordan Trowell. A member of the Great Generation, she lived through the Great Depression and was a devoted bride to her WWII soldier. She loved the Lord, attended church, and taught Sunday School at Bethel Church. She was employed at Young’s Ten Cent Store in Homerville, GA and at Toy City in Waycross, GA. She also spent a number of years as a homemaker and the co-operator of Bessie’s Kitchen, a nick-name affectionately given to the home she shared with her husband because no one ever left hungry. She loved being outdoors and spent countless hours tending the garden, picking blueberries, and going fishing. There is much to admire about the way she lived her life; she was conservative, principled, disciplined, supportive, affectionate, and cautious. Her greatest legacy is that she deeply loved her family and she always made certain that all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren knew how much she loved them. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel B. Strickland, one sister, Frances Trowell Miller of Jacksonville, FL, and one brother Freddie Lee Trowell, Sr. of Homerville, GA. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law: Robert & June Strickland, Blackshear GA; one daughter and son-in-law: Rita & Gary Harper, Orange Park, FL; six grandchildren: Kimberly (Kevin) Rodgers, Waycross, GA; Bubba Strickland, Homerville, GA; Jason Purvis, Blackshear, GA; Laney Strickland, Waycross, GA; Brittany (Shayan) Sohbatzadeh, Fleming Island, FL, Stuart (Anell) Harper, Orange Park, FL; seven great grandchildren: Rinzi Strickland, Siara Strickland, Allison Alford, Dylan Rodgers, Seth Strickland, Halee Strickland, Elizabeth Sohbatzadeh, and several other relatives. Graveside services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Strickland will be held Thursday, January 28, 2021 at three o’clock at the Shiloh Church Cemetery. Internment will be in the Shiloh Church Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Roundtree Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
