Homerville, GA Mr. Charles Burnett “Chuck” Rice, 67, passed away Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015, in Clinch Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family, following a courageous fight with cancer. Mr. Rice was born March 9, 1948 in Memphis, TN to the late Roman Knott Rice, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Burnett Rice. Mr. Rice graduated from the University of Georgia, where he received his Bachelor of Business Administration and Doctorate of Juris Prudence and was a member of The International Legal Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI). He started his law practice with Vangerpan & Rice Law Office in Atlanta, GA in 1974. In 1989, he moved to Homerville where he went to work with Chambers & Rice Law Office where he has been for the last 26 years. Among his many honors and awards, Mr. Rice won the Tradition of Excellence Award for 2015 and he was named one of the Georgia top rated lawyers in 2012. He was a member of the Georgia and Florida Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Homerville Lions Club, where he previously served as president and was named Lion of the year for 2000. He was a faithful member of the Homerville United Methodist Church. He was an active member of the Emmaus Community where he served as a Board Member for more than 11 years. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Nathan Borrows and one son, Bret Rice. Survivors include his wife: Connie Robbins Rice, Homerville; one daughter: Barbara Bennett Smith, Rochester, NY; one son, Joel Rice, Atlanta, GA; two step-daughters and husbands: Candie & Randy Lott, Hahira, GA and Stephanie & Jim Stovall, Homerville, GA; one step-son and wife: Chad & Christie Robbins, St. Simmons Island, GA; one brother: Roman Knott Rice, III, & John Metzger, Myrtle Beach, SC; seven grandchildren: Bret Smith, Meaghan Smith, Zachary Smith, Jake Stovall, Corben Stovall, Warren Stovall and Cason Lott, several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Funeral services for Mr. Rice will be held Sunday, September 13, 2015, at four o’clock in the Homerville United Methodist Church. Private family interment services will follow in the Pine Forest Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, September 13, 2015, from 2 until 4 p.m. at the Homerville United Methodist Church.
