Martha Jon Steedley Wetherington, died peacefully on Sunday, September 6, 2015, at Shands Cancer Hospital in Gainesville, Florida, surrounded by her loving family, who with her fought a courageous battle against complications resulting from cancer. She was born March 21, 1947, in Homerville, Georgia, to the late Joe and Lola Mae Steedley. She graduated from Clinch County High School in 1965 and graduated from Valdosta State University with a degree in Elementary Education. She knew from an early age that she wanted to teach and did so for 35 years, mostly in the Clinch County school system. She was a life-long member of the Homerville United Methodist Church, where she taught a youth Sunday School Class and for many years was co-chairman of the United Methodist Women’s Christmas Bazaar and co-chairman of Vacation Bible School. Most recently, Martha Jon co-chaired the redesign and renovation project of the former pastor’s home into the current Wesley Building. Martha Jon had many God given talents. Among the many, she was a beautiful seamstress and also had a natural gift for decorating and arranging flowers. Prior to Martha Jon’s illness she enjoyed socializing and traveling with her family and friends, reading, and participating in the Relay for Life, which she was a 24 year breast cancer survivor. She was also an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma women’s organization, the Red Hat Society, the Clinch Retired Educators Association and the Okefenokee District Library Board. Survivors include her husband, Darrell Wetherington of Homerville, daughter and son-in-law Paige and Dan Register of St. Johns, Florida, one step-daughter & husband, Aimee & Ken Morey, Hahira, GA, one step-son & wife: Darrell & Jennifer Wetherington, Ceadertown, GA, sister Mary Jo Griffis of Homerville, sister and brother-in-law Jennebeth and Freddy James of Homerville. She was the proud grandmother to Trent and Blaire Register, St. Johns, Florida, step-grandchildren: Anna Morey Benton, Beth Morey, Maggie Morey, Dalton Wetherington, Kaitlyn Wetherington and Brock Wetherington, and is also survived by nieces Dawn (Howard) Slocumb, Amy (Johnny) Morgan and Molly McClaine, great niece, Hailey Morgan, and nephew Will McClaine.Funeral services for Martha Jon will be held Thursday, September 10, 2015 at two o’clock at the Homerville United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Reverends John McGowan, James Davis, Dan Underwood and Howard Slocumb. Interment will be in the Pine Forest Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 till 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Donations in Martha Jon’s memory may be made to the Homerville United Methodist Church, P.O.
