Homerville, GA Mr. Ashley Jackson Carswell, 83, prominent Homerville Business owner and community leader died Thursday, July 3, 2008 at Satilla Regional Medical Center, Waycross, after an extended illness. Born in Homerville, January 28, 1925, he was the son of the late Allen N. Carswell and Vella Peagler Carswell. Mr. Carswell was the owner and operator of Carswell Motor Supply, Inc., in Homerville for the past 44 years. He received his BA degree from the University of Georgia in Athens where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Faternity. Mr. Carswell was a member of the First Baptist Church in Homerville. He served on the original board of the Clinch County Hospital Authority and was a member of the Industrial Authority helping to promote the industrial advancement of Clinch Co. He was elected to serve on the National Advertising Committee of Genuine Parts Corp. representing the southeastern NAPA Part Stores. Ashley was a decorated veteran of World War II. After receiving his training at Victorville, California he qualified as Navigator bombardier. He served in England and Germany. He was a prisoner of war in Munic Germany where he remained until the end of the war, receiving the distinguished Purple Heart. He remained in the Air Force Reserve as an instructor at the Veterans Training Center in Homerville, Georgia until his retirement as Captain in 1957 Survivors include his wife: Elaine Moylan Carswell, Homerville; one son: Curtis A. Carswell, Orlando, FL; three daughters: Martha M. Carswell, Sanford, FL and Laura C. Cox husband Keith, Homerville, Cindy M. Corbitt husband Matt, Manor; five grandchildren: Elizabeth Cox Tanner husband Casey, Homerville, Rebekah Cox and Sarah Cox, both of Valdosta, Blakely Calley and Maci Corbitt, both of Manor; three great grandchildren: Hayden Cook, Jacob Tanner and Amelia Cox, nieces Nicki Carter Ratliff husband George, Blackshear, GA, Gloria James, Blackshear, GA, Wynn C. Plowden husband John, Fernandina Beach, FL,and several other relatives. Mr. Carswell was preceded in death by one son, Ashley J. (Chip) Carswell, beother and sister-in-law, Rosoe N. & Wynell Carswell, Waycross, sisters, Virginia C. King, Waycross, Marie C. Shanze, Homerville, Heneritta M. Lee, Thomasville, GA, Thelma M. Exley, Savannah, GA, Earl Morgan and Rita C. Gray. Services for Mr. Carswell will be held Sunday, July 6, 2008 at three o’clock from the Homerville First Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Pine Forest Cemetery. Mr. Carswell will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 till 8 p.m. Mr. Carswell will be carried to the church one hour prior to the services.
