Homerville, GA Mrs. Doris Stone Strickland, 77 , passed away Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012, in the Mayo Clinic Hospital, Jacksonville, FL, following a short illness. Mrs. Strickland was born July 15, 1934, the fourth of thirteen children of Gordon Rufus “Bud” and Vara Crews Stone in Hoboken. She attended elementary and high school in Hoboken and graduated Valedictorian of the class of 1952. She won the Sylvester Mumford Scholarship to attend college at Georgia State College for women, where she graduated in June 1956 with a B.S. degree in home economics. She taught school in Nahunta, Hoboken, Manor, Wacona, Jacksonville, FL, Kingsland and Clinch County. She retired in 1987 on disability. She became a member of Hoboken Baptist Church when a teenager. She was married to Wesley Herschel Strickland in 1958. They had three children, Jane, Jim and Kathy. She was a member of the Clinch Retired Educators and served as membership chairman for several years. She was a volunteer of the Pink Ladies for years and was president for two years and vice president for two years. She was a member of the Homerville Free Will Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one brother: Virgil C. Stone, a sister, Lucille Whitbeck and one grandson: Brian Hill. Survivors are two daughters and a son-in-law: Jane & Marvin Welch, Homerville, and Kathy Mathis, Lakeland, GA; one son and daughter-in-law: Jim & Nancy Knight Strickland, DuPont, GA; seven grandchildren: Myrinda Hill, Rebecca Collins, Pamela Harrell, Jami Lee Pearson, Christian Strickland, Jennifer Mathis and Brittney Mathis, twelve great grandchildren: Cian Hill, Dont’e Hill, Ciera Hill, Amara Hill, Jaylee Pearson, Alecce Pearson, Serena Harrell, Ariana Collins, Jaymarion Tyree Hill, David Harrell, Jacob Johnson and Ashton Hill; three sisters and a brother-in-law: Vicy Synder, Brunswick, GA, Joan & Wade Pryer, Grandview, MO and Betty Jane Dove, Elcajan, CA; seven brothers & sisters-in-law: Henry Jackson & Loretta Stone, Waynesville, GA, Billy Stone and Sam Stone, Monroe, GA, Bobby & Gail Stone and Davis & Skeeter Stone, Hoboken, GA, Roy & Linda Stone, Shellman, GA and Rogers & Ann Stone, Brunswick, GA; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Services for Mrs. Strickland will be held Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, at two o’clock from the Homerville Free Will Baptist Church. Internment will be in the Shiloh Church Cemetery.
