Gloria Dickinson Peagler

Homerville, GA Mrs. Gloria Frances Dickinson Peagler, 74, passed away Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, after an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Dame Peagler, Jr. Mrs. Peagler was born February 27, 1937 in Thomasville, GA to the late Edward Francis Dickinson and Frances Stephens Dickinson. She was a member of the Valdosta High School Class of 1955 and had attended all their class reunions. She was a graduate of Valdosta State University with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in history. Mrs. Peagler was an educator in the Clinch County High School for many years. She was a respected teacher who had high expectations for all her students at CCHS. Throughout her career as an educator, she made a positive difference in the lives of many students. During her tenure, she served as Social Studies Department Chair and CCHS Annual Sponsor. She was also the faculty advisor to the Clinch Mock Trial Team for nine years. During that time, the Clinch team won six regional titles and went to the State Mock Trial Competitions. Many of her students won individual awards as witnesses and attorneys, but all learned how to think and express themselves on their feet, and all had a great time in the process. Mrs. Peagler was a loyal supporter of the program and a source of inspiration and encouragement for all her students on the Mock Trial Teams. Mrs. Peagler also taught innovative entrepreneurship when she incorporated a stock market competition in her history classes. After retiring from teaching in June of 2001, Mrs. Peagler joined the Clinch County Retired Teachers Association. Many friends and students will remember her as an avid reader. Her friends especially remember that she loved to play bridge and to meet with friends at Red Hat functions. As a member of the local Library Board and the Regional Library Board in Waycross, Mrs. Peagler served in many positions. Survivors are two daughters and a son-in-law: Pamela Peagler Abell & Jock Abell, Columbus, GA and Holly Ann Peagler, Valdosta, GA; three sons and daughters-in-law: George Dame “Chip” III & Patty Peagler, Alpharetta, GA, Robert & Beth Peagler, Valdosta, GA and David & Maria Peagler, Jasper, GA; ten grandchildren: Thomas Abell & William Abell, both of Columbus, GA, Emily Peagler, George Dame “Chad” Peagler IV, & Grant Peagler, all of Alpharetta, GA, Hunter Blair Peagler, Hardy Dame “Hank” Peagler & Robert Hamilton Peagler, all of Valdosta, GA, Samuel David Peagler & Zachary Edward Peagler both of Jasper, GA and several other relatives. Services for Mrs. Peagler will be held Friday, Oct. 21, 2011, at four o’clock from the Homerville United Methodist Church, her home church. Internment will be in the Pine Forest Cemetery, in the Peagler Family lot. Visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Roundtree Funeral Home. Mrs. Peagler will be carried to the church one hour prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory are given towards the Building Fund of Homerville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 145, Homerville, GA 31634. Roundtree Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
